1 //The challenge
I worked with a professional services firm where senior staff were spending their most expensive hours reading routine contract language that did not actually need their judgment.
- Partners were reviewing every clause in every contract, regardless of how routine the language actually was
- Client turnaround on standard agreements slipped because review queues backed up behind senior calendars
- Junior staff could not be trusted with the review yet, so nothing got delegated at all
2 //The Solution
I helped this firm build a document intelligence workflow that flagged unusual clauses and summarized routine ones, so senior review time went only where it actually mattered.
Standard language got a quick summary and a flag if anything fell outside the firm's normal terms, while everything else still landed on a partner's desk.
- Contract analysis flagged clauses that fell outside the firm’s standard terms automatically
- Routine language received a plain summary instead of requiring a full line by line read
- Partners kept final sign off on every contract, with review time freed for what actually needed it
Senior judgment is the most expensive resource in a professional services firm. It should never be spent reading language that has not changed in years.

3 //My Pesonal Thoughts
I see this constantly in professional services. Firms protect billable hours fiercely and still waste senior hours constantly. Those are not the same thing.
- The real cost here was never the contract review itself. It was who was doing it
- Junior staff were not the risk. Untracked, inconsistent review across the firm was the actual risk
- AI did not replace partner judgment. It made sure partner judgment only got spent where it counted
4 //Key Outcomes
- Average partner review time per standard contract dropped substantially across the pilot group
- Client turnaround on routine agreements improved enough to become a selling point in proposals
- Review consistency improved because every contract now followed the same flagged criteria
